EcoVadis Rating 2024: Silver for KremsChem Austria
KremsChem Austria was able to exchange its previous bronze medal for a silver medal this year, placing it in the top 15 % of companies rated by EcoVadis. We are proud to present our ongoing improvements and efforts in the areas of environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement with this external award.
Health & Safety
Taking responsibility and caring for the health and safety of our employees, customers and neighbors is a basic pillar for KremsChem Austria as a chemical company.
Occupational health and safety is always a top priority in all our processes at site. In 2023 we had our health and safety management system certified according to ISO 45001 to officially recognize our management system internationally.
As we at KremsChem also believe that a certification may be only a basis for further improvement, we are always open and support discussion, dialogue as well as contributions by our employees and business partners.
Environment
Regarding our social, environmental and economic impacts KremsChem always strive to integrate a high level of sustainability in our whole value chain.
In our production and transport processes, KremsChem Austria performs a maximum of sustainable thinking by using different possibilities in terms of transport, resource use and energy consumption.
Energy
KremsChem is very proud of its energy generating and consumption system. Due to the production of Formaldehyde at the site, KremsChem produces weak gas, which contains hydrogen. This hydrogen weak gas is used in hydrogen motors to produce electricity. Since 1996, KremsChem and preceding companies are pioneer in hydrogen gas electrification.
Today KremsChem creates about two thirds of electricity for the whole site from weak-gas electrification. The remaining share of electricity consumption is obtained from renewable resources.
The main share of the steam used on site is generated from process energy. The small remaining portion is mostly generated by incineration of renewable resources.
Nevertheless, we at KremsChem always strive for a higher level of sustainability and efficiency: With the extension of our existing electricity generation, we generate 100% of our energy on site, by 2024.
Transportation
Due to KremsChem's location at the Danube River and the proximity to the Krems Harbor, we get some of our raw material deliveries by shipping over the river route. However, the train is the main transport facility for our raw material. Due to connections to the main railroad in Northeast, KremsChem can be supplied by the train to a comparably high amount.
In respect to transportation of manufactured products, the balance is also mainly on the side of environmentally friendly transportation by train. Transport on the river is – due to the properties of resins – not advisable, and in most cases not possible.
Water Usage
Wastewater treatment is an important issue at KremsChem in Krems, primarily because the plant is connected to Austria´s biggest river, the Danube. The amount of wastewater is comparatively small because process water is reused to a high extent.
The environmental quality of the residual water is continually measured before leaving the plant.
